Jess Allred - Flash Memoir
The Cost of Your Future
Those 12 years of school are to help us get ready for college. We learn what we like and what we dislike it helps us find what we want to hopefully do with the rest of our lives. We take core class, math, english, science, PE and health. We can also take other fun classes like art, creative writing, drama, automotive and many more. These years in school are to help us learn who we are. Then comes the last year of school where we start to make that decision.
When I was 14 years old I had a 15 year plan. I wanted to be a Medical Examiner. You know those guys that get the fun job of cutting open dead people to find out how and why they died. That was what I wanted to do. My hero was Ducky from the TV Show NCIS. My plan was to do good in high school and play a few sports. Head to Dixie State College (back when it wasn’t a university yet). I wanted to serve a LDS mission. Therefore before I turn that wonderful age of 21 I would work hard at Dixie and get ready to transfer to the University of Utah for Medical school. That was my plan or so I thought.
Through my years of high school I took a few graphic design classes. I learned to screen print t-shirts, cut vinyl stickers, some photoshop tricks and I learned to love everything about graphic design. As I started applying to different schools to saw the price tag and oh, was I shocked. I couldn’t even dream of leaving the state, let alone my small town. I decided to head to Dixie State and live at home because I couldn’t afford anything else and Dixie State offered me a small scholarship. As I started my first semester I decided graphic design was what I wanted to do. So, excited that I had found something I enjoyed and was good. I go to change my major they didn’t even offer that degree. All that work in those 12 years to get to struggling to pay for school to learn something I love, to move forward in life. As kids growing up we are always told we can be whatever we want. They forgot to mention that it really helps if you have a deep wallet to buy your future.
